Its Scholastic Book Fair time!

From Monday, March 7 through Saturday, March 12, we will be hosting our annual Scholastic Book Fair in our meeting room.  This event is a fundraiser for the children’s library programming.  For every dollar spent on books and merchandise at the book fair, a percentage comes back to our library’s account with Scholastic to purchase books, audio books, posters, bookmarks, and summer reading program prizes.  We are considered a “success story” with Scholastic because we have increased our sales and utilized our “Scholastic Dollars” in so many ways.  This year our reward for this is a free basket of books worth $100!  We will also be holding an online fair this year so that you can still purchase from our event, even if you are unable to attend in person.  The website is bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/drakepubliclibrary  If you are interested in volunteering to help us run our book fair, please call us at 856-6676.  Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and able to make change and run a cash register.  Thank you in advance for your continued support of our annual Scholastic Book Fair and the children’s programming at Drake Public Library!

Library Corner Launch with IPTV

Iowa Public Television Brings

New Library Resources to Centerville

IPTV will unveil a new Library Corner at the Drake Public Library

(Johnston, Iowa)  – Kids spending time at the Drake Public Library will have new resources available to help promote the connections between public media and early literacy and math skills, thanks to a new Library Corner placed at the library by Iowa Public Television. The new IPTV Ready for School Library Corner will open as part of a children’s story time event at the library with activities and resources for kids and families.

Families are invited to attend the launch event:

Monday, February 8th  3:30 p.m. Drake Public Library, 115 Drake Avenue— Centerville, IA

The Library Corner creates a bright, fun-filled learning environment with age-appropriate materials for use by children, families and librarians. PBS KIDS DVDs, Martha Speaks Read Aloud books and resources, a colorful banner featuring PBS KIDS characters, a Peg + Cat standing character, a colorful rug and more, all help to create an inviting space for children. Online resources include PBS KIDS Lab, a website with more than 140 games and hands-on activities that help to build early math and literacy skills.

“We’re pleased to expand these Library Corners to another location in Iowa,” said Terry Rinehart, Director of Educational Services at Iowa Public Television. “With this Library Corner, families can spend time together reading books, engaging in hands-on activities, and playing online games that support early reading skills like recognizing letters and sounds, and early math skills such as counting and measurement.”

The IPTV Library Corners are part of Iowa Public Television’s Ready for School initiative which works with Iowa communities to strengthen the math and literacy skills of children ages 2-8. Learn more at Iptv.org.

For more information about Iowa Public Television’s educational offerings, please contact Susan Ramsey at 515-725-9703 or Susan.Ramsey@iptv.org.

Library T-Shirt

Librarian Humor. Most librarians own several reading related shirts

I grew up in Centerville, Iowa. My mom and I would walk to the Drake library every Saturday morning. I loved the place, the light seemed magical streaming through the giant windows. I remember the children’s area vividly. Mrs. King knew everything and remembered my favorite authors and subjects. She was always glad to see me and I would talk to her as long as I could. She had a whole strip of school pictures from all the area kids up on a bookcase.
Upstairs was a formal area. People spoke in hushed tones and glided along picking out titles. Dorothy Owens bustled around and Gerlinde Lutke checked out titles to adults. Kids were seen not heard. The magazines were all on a couple of giant tables behind the circulation desk. Mom and I would fill up bags of books and magazines and drag them home. My schooldays followed a strict pattern; school, snack, play, dinner, read. I read all the time. I read when I should have been cleaning my room, I read when I should have been asleep! I would look at my mom’s library magazines when she finished with them. I loved Rolling Stone and Family Circle.
Computers didn’t exist in homes back then. We would be allowed to play Oregon Trail on the computer in the school library once a week. We didn’t have a telephone in our house. The television turned on for the news, Dallas, and Fantasy Island and then sat silent. The social networks back then were the school playground or the local grocery store checkout.
The library was where I landed my first job. I spent one whole summer typing up cutter numbers for shelf cards and spine labels. I used a typewriter and sat in the reading room clacking away eight hours a day. I continued to work there during my high school days. The library job didn’t do much for my popularity, but neither did my complexion or my Sun In streaky hair. Gerlinde would feed me crackers and butter when we stayed in the dungeon repairing books in the evenings.
I have worked at this library on four different occasions during my life. My most recent job title has been Library Director for the last eight years. I will be leaving in a few weeks to start a new chapter in my career. The thing about the Drake Library is that it endures. Few things in life stay the same, divorces, death, new pets, old friends; people change but the Drake Library endures. The building sits at the head of Drake Avenue, majestic and stout. Stores come and go, restaurants close, families move in and out of the area. But people return to Centerville for Pancake Day, Homecoming, and often visit the Drake Library.
I will have new co-workers, new library patrons, and a new building to manage as Director of the Adair County Library in Kirksville, Missouri. Stop by and say hi if you are ever in Kirksville—I mean it, I will miss my people!

I will remember the Drake Library. I will remember the creaky freaky glass floor, the portrait of Governor Drake, the patrons that come in every day. I will remember who reads John Grisham, who hates due date receipts, who calls in to renew and the ones that say they already paid that library fine.
JeNel Allen Barth will be the interim Director, she has been here for some time and will handle things! Stop in at my going away party on Wednesday February 10th between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. I wish the best for the Drake Public library and all the people that visit the library. Thank you for a great run! Here’s an old joke for you: Old librarians never die, they just get renewed.

Resolve to read!

It is the last week of the year!

The house is a mess, Christmas presents sit opened but not put away. Christmas candies and fudge have lost their appeal. Nobody knows what day of the week it is or if they should go to work or hibernate.

Now is the time to:

Make some resolutions for the upcoming year. Here are mine:

  1. Read more books
  2. Stop checking my phone and wasting time on social media networks.

Clean out bookcases and donate books and DVDs to your library.

2015– Oh what a year!

friends1

December is coming to a close, now is the time to reflect on the past year at the Drake Public Library. Here are some highlights of our year.

Scholastic book fair in March had profits of $1,717.41. Library received many books with the Scholastic dollars that were raised.

Friends of Drake Public library held a penny drive with the hopes of collecting fifty pounds of pennies. They netted over two hundred pounds of pennies! That is no small feat!

The Summer Reading program was a success. Over 300 local kids registered and counted reading hours. Yard signs purchased by Friends of the Drake Library dotted the landscape all over town. The theme for the annual event was “Every Hero has a story”. The library hosted a Veteran’s Appreciation program. Participants also had a visit from the Science Center of Iowa, Blank Park Zoo, and took a field trip to the Appanoose County Historical museum. A finale program wrapped things up with an outdoor evening movie and a Make your own Minion treat bar.

Circulation of library materials from December 1, 2014 to December 1, 2015 totaled 89,359.

The Kiss a Goat contest raised $438.77 for the library. Contestants Pete Lind, Mark Waits, and Jan Spurgeon were edged out by write in candidate Greger Barth. He puckered up and kissed George the Goat on September 11, 2015.

Friends also held a raffle and a Christmas boutique.

Two new book clubs were started by staff member Crys McKissick. Genre Shifters Book Club for adults and D3 for avid young readers.

As always the library offered free wireless internet, copy services, public access computers, e-books, faxing, DVD rental, audiobooks, large print rental,  test proctoring, meeting room availability and the book nook.

Thank you for all the Christmas candy plates, sugar cookies, chips, fudge, homemade bread and other goodies! The library staff is overwhelmed by our patrons’ generosity.

2016 will be a great year!

Meet a staff member

Crys McKissick, Drake Library Staff member

Crys McKissick, Drake Library Staff member

Name: Crys
How long have you worked here?
2.5 years
Where did you grow up?
Pensacola FL and Nashville, TN
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love most aspects of my job but helping a reluctant reader find that one book that acts as a spark to ignite a passion for reading is my life’s goal. Also helping girls discover that dragons are awesome and Sci-Fi/Fantasy is not just for the boys.
What hobbies and past times do you enjoy outside of work?
I’m a homeschooling mama to two sweet girls. We love learning, exploring the world around us and arts and crafts. Outside of that I love to sew and quilt, spend time with my friends and cook. I routinely sacrifice at least a night of sleep a week to read “just one more chapter” and of course end up with the book finished at 3am. Good thing I’m addicted to coffee!
Favorite movie or television show?
I rarely watch anything but I have been enjoying the occasional episode of Merlin on Netflix.
Favorite book, author, or genre??
This list is long and random! I guess I’m what you would call an eclectic reader. My primary genre is Fantasy with a dash of Sci Fi but I also love Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Rebecca…. Gothic Romances. I enjoy classics. I read A LOT of Juvenile Fiction and absolutely adore anything related to the Arthurian Legend. Right now I’m also reading quite a bit on education styles, particularly Classical methods.
Anything else you would like to share?
I collect tea cups and tea pots. I have a pet parrot named Sami. I recently started taking tap dancing lessons which has always been a dream of mine. I believe in the power of red lipstick, dark chocolate and coffee. If you want to live a good life follow the wisdom of Yoda, Mr. Miyagi, Professor Dumbledore and Jesus. I’m also very random.

Name: Larry Heikes

How long have you served on Drake Library Board of Trustees: Since May 2013

Any other volunteer or civic groups that you belong to: Foster Care Review Board

How long have you lived in Centerville: Since 1982 when our family moved from Iowa City.

Why are libraries important to you? For me they are like a bookstore where everything is free. In libraries everyone is equal.—libraries are free for all and offer many services besides books.

Favorite book, author, or type of reading material? I read a variety of genres except romance and westerns. I especially like historical novels, biographies and crime fiction. Here are some books I really like that may not be on every “Best Books” list:

“The Sparrow” and “Children of God” by Mary Doria Russell

“Angle of Repose” by Wallace Stegner

“The Brothers Karamazov” by Dostoyevsky

“The Sheltering Sky” by Paul Bowles

“Germinal” by Emile Zola

“A Fine Balance” by Rohinton Mistry

And a biography:

“American Prometheus : The triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird
